What it is

Maca is a root vegetable grown at high altitude in the Peruvian Andes, eaten there as food for centuries and dried for storage. Black maca is the least common of the three colours — most supplements use the yellow, which is far cheaper — so the colour on the label is a real distinction rather than marketing.

The 40:1 extract means forty parts raw root concentrated to one, which is where the "40,000mg equivalent" figure comes from. Alongside it: ashwagandha, an adaptogenic root from Ayurvedic tradition, and fenugreek, a seed used across South Asian and Middle Eastern cooking and traditional preparations.
