What it does

At 5% this is the gentle end of the acid range — a starting point rather than a strong peel, which makes it the sensible first acid for anyone who has been put off by stinging. Glycolic works on dullness and rough texture at the surface; lactic acid is the mildest of the alpha hydroxy acids and adds moisture as it exfoliates, which glycolic alone does not.

The polymer base holds the acids against the skin more evenly than a watery solution, so the low concentration goes further. Skin looks brighter and feels smoother, gradually rather than dramatically — which at this strength is the point.

How to use

On clean, dry skin in the evening, apply a thin layer and let it absorb before applying anything else. Start twice a week and build up. Don't use it on the same night as retinol or another acid.

Wear broad-spectrum SPF every morning — acids increase sun sensitivity, and that continues for about a week after you stop.
