What it does

Most sunscreens address UVB and UVA and stop there. Total Defense + Repair also screens infrared-A, the longer wavelength that penetrates deepest and is generated by heat as well as sunlight. Whether that matters day to day is still debated, but it's the reason this sits at the top of the range and costs more than the Essential Defense line. The filter system is a hybrid: 10% zinc oxide for broad-spectrum mineral cover, with homosalate, octinoxate and octisalate handling UVB, plus antioxidants. The texture is light enough for daily wear under makeup, and it holds up for 80 minutes of water or sweat.

How to use

Apply generously to face and neck 15 minutes before going out, as the last step of your morning routine. Reapply every two hours, and after 80 minutes of swimming or sweating or immediately after towel drying. Water resistance is a tested limit, not a guarantee — no sunscreen is waterproof.
