What it does

Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, which is the whole reason it's used for congestion — it gets into the pore itself rather than working only on the surface, where a water-soluble glycolic acid stops. That makes it the right acid for skin that gets blocked around the nose and chin, and the wrong one for skin that's simply dull.

Niacinamide alongside it works on the look of enlarged pores and uneven tone, and takes the edge off the drying that salicylic acid can cause on its own — pairing them is the sensible bit of the formula. Pores look smaller and skin feels smoother, and it leaves a clean base that makeup sits on better.

How to use

On clean, dry skin, sweep one pad over the face avoiding the eye area, and let it dry before applying anything else. Start every other night and build up. Don't use it on the same night as retinol or another acid.

Wear broad-spectrum SPF every morning — any exfoliating acid increases sun sensitivity.

Who it is for

For oily and combination skin working on congestion, texture and the look of pores. Also usable on the back and chest. Persistent or painful spots are worth a GP appointment rather than a stronger pad — there are effective prescription treatments, and the earlier scarring is prevented the better.
