What it is
Berberine is a yellow alkaloid from barberry, goldenseal and related plants, used in Chinese and Ayurvedic traditions and heavily researched over the past decade. The Ceylon cinnamon is a genuine distinction. Most cinnamon supplements use cassia, which is cheaper and contains far higher levels of coumarin — a compound that can affect the liver in sustained doses. Do not take it alongside diabetes medication — berberine lowers blood sugar and can compound the effect of metformin, insulin or a sulfonylurea.
Berberine inhibits CYP3A4, the liver enzyme that processes a large share of prescription drugs — the same one grapefruit affects. It can raise blood levels of statins, ciclosporin, some blood thinners and many others. If you take any prescribed medication, speak to a pharmacist before starting. Not suitable for children.
