What it is

Berberine is a yellow alkaloid found in several plants — barberry, goldenseal, Oregon grape, Chinese goldthread — and used in both Chinese and Ayurvedic traditions for centuries. Berberine crosses the placenta and passes into breast milk, and in newborns it can displace bilirubin and cause a serious form of jaundice. This is the most important warning on this page.

Do not take it if you are on medication for diabetes — berberine lowers blood sugar, and combined with metformin, insulin or a sulfonylurea it can lower it further than intended.

Berberine inhibits CYP3A4, the liver enzyme that processes a large share of prescription drugs — the same enzyme grapefruit affects, which is why grapefruit carries warnings on so many medicines. That means it can raise blood levels of statins, ciclosporin, some blood thinners, and many others. If you take any prescribed medication, speak to a pharmacist before starting this.
