What it does

The distinctive part is the microcrystals — fine particles that create tiny channels at the skin's surface so the actives around them go further than they would from an ordinary serum. It's the same principle as the spicule serums Korean brands have been building around, at a low 1% concentration.

Adenosine is worth knowing about: it's one of only two ingredients Korea's MFDS approves for wrinkle-care functional cosmetics, which is a specific regulatory designation rather than a marketing term. Niacinamide at 2% works on the look of uneven tone at a concentration mild enough for reactive skin — the 10% formulas are what cause flushing in some people.

How to use

After cleansing and toner, apply a small amount and pat it in gently — do not rub or massage, which drives the microcrystals in harder and is the usual cause of irritation. Follow with moisturiser. Start two or three times a week in the evening and build up. Expect a mild tingle; it settles.

For skin working on texture and the look of fine lines, and specifically for anyone who has tried retinol and found it too much.

Despite the sensitive-skin positioning, a microcrystal product is not the right choice for genuinely reactive skin, rosacea, eczema or active breakouts — it works physically, which is the wrong approach on skin that's already inflamed.
