What it does

Like its sibling in the range, this works through spicules — microscopic needle-shaped particles that create tiny channels at the skin's surface so the actives around them travel further than they would from an ordinary serum. It's the domestic version of what a microneedling facial does, at a fraction of the intensity.

The difference between the two boosters is what they carry. The Plum Peptide version is built around peptides for the look of firmness; this one uses red onion extract with panthenol, hyaluronic acid and collagen, and is aimed at the look of pores and uneven texture. Expect tingling for a few minutes after applying — that's the mechanism working, and it settles. Skin looks smoother and pores look less obvious with regular use.

How to use

After cleansing and toner, apply a small amount and pat in gently — do not rub or massage, which presses the spicules in harder and is the usual cause of irritation. Follow with moisturiser. Start once or twice a week in the evening and build from there. Wear sunscreen the following morning.

For normal, combination or oily skin working on texture and the look of enlarged pores.

Not suitable for sensitive or reactive skin, or for anyone with rosacea, eczema or active breakouts. Spicules work physically, which is the wrong approach for skin that's already inflamed — if spots are the main concern, this is not the product for that, and persistent or painful acne is worth a GP appointment where there are treatments that genuinely work. Don't use it alongside retinol or acids on the same night, keep it away from the eye area, and patch-test on the jawline 24 hours before using it on the whole face.
