What it does

Black rice is fermented before it goes into the bottle, and that step is the point. Fermentation breaks large molecules into smaller ones the skin takes up more readily, and it's the same principle behind the Japanese sake-lees tradition and Korean hanbang skincare. The result is a toner with the substance of an essence rather than the thin, evaporating feel of a water toner.

Applied to damp skin it gives immediate comfort and leaves a faint tack that tells you something has stayed behind. Skin looks plumper and more even with regular use, and the unscented formula suits people who react to fragrance — the most common irritant in natural skincare. How to use

After cleansing, pour a little into your palms and press it into face and neck. Apply while skin is still damp — that is the whole mechanism, and letting your face dry first throws most of it away. Layer two or three thin applications if your skin is dry. Follow with serum and cream, morning and evening.
